SUMMARY:LA Forward: Want to Run for Neighborhood Council?
DESCRIPTION:From LA Forward: \nThere are 99 Neighborhood Councils across the City of Los Angeles. They’re a unique way to learn about how local government works and to influence important policy decisions. Historically these official advisory bodies have been conservative and NIMBYish but we’re seeing progressives start to win seats and even gain majorities. \nElections are being held March through June of 2021 and the filing deadlines to become a candidate are coming up soon. We’re encouraging all progressive Angelenos to consider running for office in their own neighborhood. To help you decide whether to run and show you how to be effective\, we’re hosting an info session this Thursday.

However\, please note that Neighborhood Council elections happen regionally over a six-month cycle\, so your candidate enrollment period may not yet be open (more details below.) \nEach info session starts with a general overview of how NC Elections work\, how to campaign successfully\, and how to apply to run. After a short break\, you’ll join breakout groups hosted by some of the Neighborhood Councils whose candidate applications are currently open\, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet NC members and find out what it’s like to serve in your community. \nIf you’re new to Neighborhood Councils\, the webinar will give you an overview and introduction; if you’re a current or former member of a Neighborhood Council board or committee\, the tips we’ll share on successful outreach will help you in your upcoming elections campaign as well as in your current and future NC work. \nUpcoming Candidate Info Session dates: \n\n\nSaturday December 5\, 2020: 3:00 – 5:00pm (PST) \n\n\nSaturday December 12\, 2020: 9:00am – 11:00am (PST) \n\n\nRSVP now \nSign up to attend and see new session dates as they are added\, at: \nhttp://NCevents.Eventbrite.com \nWe encourage you to RSVP even if you aren’t sure if you can attend\, as doing so will put you on the email list to receive important resources and a copy of the presentation after the session. \nSpanish translation will be provided. SUMMARY:Neighborhood Resilience and Security After a Disaster
DESCRIPTION:After a major earthquake\, city services will be unavailable for days\, if not weeks.\n\nWe always talk about what happens hours after a disaster. This training will focus on what happens 5 to 7 to 14 days after a disaster.\n\nEveryone should be prepared to survive on their own without markets or gas stations or restaurants during this time.\n\nBut we don’t exist in a vacuum.\nWe live in communities\, in neighborhoods\, in street blocks. By working with our neighbors and combining\, trading\, or bartering for resources\, it’s easier for everyone to survive.\n\nBut time and time again\, we hear people who are worried about letting their neighbors know what they have or are worried that their neighborhoods will become targets by those who didn’t prepare.\n\nAn active\, prepared neighborhood will actually be less of a target than a single home that is prepared but isolated on their own.\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, December 16th\, 7pm-9pm Pacific Time.\n\nThis training will be hosted on Microsoft Teams.\n\nYou will need to register on this Eventbrite to receive the invite to the Teams Meeting and instructions on how to join. Signups end 15 minutes before the training. We will be available an hour before the training to help test and make sure you get in.\nIf this is the first time you are using Microsoft Teams\, please don’t wait until the last minute to test.\n\nRegister Here

Board members serve their terms in office as volunteers\, and are elected by the members of the communities they serve. \nAt our Neighborhood Council Candidate Info Session\, you’ll learn tips for: \n\nrunning a successful campaign\nconnecting with voters\nadvocating for issues you’re passionate about\nwriting your personal statements\nfilling out your candidate application with the City Clerk\n\nThis virtual session will take place on Zoom. Details to join the session online or by phone will be shared in your RSVP confirmation email. \nWe encourage you to RSVP even if you aren’t sure if you can attend\, as doing so will put you on the email list to receive important resources and a copy of the presentation after the session. \nSpanish translation will be provided. Please email us at empowerLA@LAcity.org 72 hours before the workshop begins\, for accessibility or translation help. \nCandidate Info Video \nLearn more about what it means to be a Neighborhood Council member\, including the average time commitment and the opportunities you’ll have to be a voice for your community in this short video: http://tiny.cc/CandidateInfoVideo \nFAQs \nWho can run for office on a Neighborhood Council? \nUnlike other city\, state\, or federal elections\, voting and being a candidate in Neighborhood Council (NC) elections is open to more than just the residents of a community. \nParticipation is open to those who live\, work\, or own property or a business within an NC’s boundaries\, as well as to “community interest stakeholders\,” such as church members\, local students (or parents of students)\, or members of local service organizations. \nCandidates need not be US citizens or legal residents to qualify. Participation is also open to the formerly incarcerated. \nThe minimum age to vote is 16. The minimum age to run for most Neighborhood Council seats is 18\, except for candidates for the Youth Seat (on Councils which have them)\, who may be between the ages of 14-17. \nWhen is my Neighborhood Council’s Election Day? And when is my candidate application due? \nNeighborhood Council elections are happening on a series of 12 regional dates between November 2020 and mid-June 2021. Please note that voting in all NC elections this season will be exclusively Vote-By-Mail. \n91 of LA’s 99 Neighborhood Councils are holding elections this season – look up your NC’s Election Day date and Election Region # here: \nhttp://tiny.cc/2021NCElectionDates \nCandidate applications open a few months before each regional Election Day\, with start dates ranging from mid-November 2020 to mid-February 2021. \nTo determine your NC’s candidate filing window\, find your NC’s Election Region # on the list linked above; then look up timeline details for your Election Region at the link below (scroll down to see Regional details): \nhttp://tiny.cc/NCRegionalTimelines \nHow do I look up which Neighborhood Council I belong to? \nEnter your address in the search bar at: http://tiny.cc/FindMyNC \nHow can I learn more about Neighborhood Council elections? \nhttp://EmpowerLA.org/elections \nWhat are Neighborhood Councils? \nLA’s 99 Neighborhood Councils form the grassroots level of the Los Angeles city government. The system was established in 1999 to connect their communities to City Hall. The Councils advocate on issues like homelessness\, land use\, housing\, emergency preparedness\, sustainability\, aging\, youth programs\, transportation\, and parks. They also provide a local voice on the use of city funds and delivery of city services to their communities. \nWhile Neighborhood Council board members are volunteers\, they are public officials elected by the members of their community. Most board members serve two-year terms; a few Councils have four-year terms. \nLearn more: http://EmpowerLA.org/about-neighborhood-councils \nQuestions? Contact us: \nEmpowerLA@LACity.org
