The History of Palms
In 1886, when “The Palms” was established, it was the first suburb of the City of Los Angeles. At that time it was mostly farms on the vast reaches of Rancho La Ballona. The next year, an ornamented, Eastlake-style train station was built near today’s Motor Avenue and National Boulevard, halfway between Downtown L.A. and Santa Monica.
Since then, much has changed. Palms is at the heart of LA’s Westside and home to over 30,000 people and one of the most diverse populations in the Southland.
Today, the neighborhood is comprised of three business districts and five residential districts. If you live, work, own property or have some other connection with our community, you are automatically a member of the Palms Neighborhood Council. Our governing body, the Palms Representative Assembly, represents us to the city government and its agencies.
